So among this group of pyTivo nuts, have any of you considered something other than TiVo for your future DVR needs? I have a Series 2 with lifetime that I'll continue using until it dies, but I've thought for some time now that my next DVR will not be a TiVo. I don't like monthly fees, and something like MythTV would be much more configurable.
I've been keeping my eye on MythTV, looking towards the pre-built ones because I'm lazy. |

I don't mind the fees as long as my service works all the time, and when I call with problems I get competent people....that's happened every time I have called them.
I like the Tivo because as much as I am a techie, my wife is not. Other DVRs (or should I say HTPCs) are not the point where they "just work." It takes a while to get everything configured and more importantly, usually have to be pretty technically smart to work with it.
I like Tivo because I get my tech on, and she can watch TV shows that is recorded for her. Heck, she can even select and watch video from our computer using pyTivo....
Until something else becomes as easy as Tivo, then I am a Tivo fan...

Same here.
I like the TiVo since it's very user-friendly. The open source guys have made very nice progress over the past year or two, but they're still not caught up to TiVo's ease of use.
Additionally, TiVo offers the recording of encrypted material with CableCARD. That's something the open source guys can't even touch at the moment. |

So, basically this is the HD version of what TiVo had to do to control a STB in the early days ? Let the STB do all the heavy lifting, and record its output ? Serial or IR control, right ?
Big question about this particular box is that they might not EVER be able to enable the video out function. That's a HUGE negative. The last think I wanna do is have three boxes (STB, this thing, and a PC for playback) when I could just have a TiVo. 'Nuff said.
Also, two tuners is the industry standard now, and trying to do that with this box would be over-complicated and very expensive. |

See, I'm just not enough of a video nut to hang out with you guys. 
I'm happy with my SD cable service, and 27 inch SD TV, and I don't do any premium channels or pay-per-view.
The user friendly thing is an issue, which is why I've been looking at the pre-built MythTV boxes. Even if I get in and mess around with it, it comes pre-configured so my wife and kids could use it to watch TV. |

| In addition to my 2 series 2 Tivos, I had the cable company DVR for about two years when I bought my HD TV. It was before the Series 3 came out. The cable company DVR was horrible. It was two steps backwards from Tivo. Even after the Series 3 came out, I didn't come back to Tivo because of the cost. When the Tivo HD came out, I pulled the trigger and bought two of them and am glad I did. I like the appliance aspect of Tivo and everyone in the family knows how to operate the Tivo and download shows from another Tivo or pyTivo. |
