I migght get a kurobox to make my server
I see part of a howto is done. I've used Linux for 11 years, so it doesn't scare me.
Is there more of a how-to to get the basic system up to speed, get python up and get pytivo up and running? |
I'll be updating the original howto I did on kurobox.com. Right now that is really outdated since its for Fedora Core 5.
That howto is at

They have plenty of other howtos for FreeLink, Gentoo and even Ubuntu. _________________ ------------------------------------------------------

Nowadays, you have several good choices. The Kurobox Pro looks pretty sweet. It is faster and can be had with enough NVM to run the operating system directly.
I have a howto on getting an original Kurobox set up with uboot and freelink, I need to add the parts for pyTivo, but haven't had time to work in it for a while.
In short, freelink includes python 2.4, I used apt-get to install 2.5. I then installed python-imaging, ffmpeg and cheetah. Finally I downloaded Wmcbrine's pytivo and set it up. I deleted the cheetah that comes in his distro and away you go.
Don't do a conversion though, it is way too slow, only serve preconverted mpeg-2s.
Lots of good stuff is at http://buffalo.nas-central.org/
What How-to are you looking at? |

I setup a multifunction server.
Hardware:
ASRock P4i65G Pentium 4 Motherboard
2.4Ghz P4
512 MB DDR
5x 200 GB IDE Hard Drives
2x 250 GB IDE Hard Drives
1x 400 GB IDE Hard Drive
Generic CM Stacker Clone case from Tiger Direct
8 Cold-Swap IDE Drive Carriages
Software:
Windows XP with Server 2003 RAID-5 Hack
3x RAID-5 Arrays at 1.3TB of storage
1x 16 Gig OS volume and 1x 30 Gig Scratch Disk
Virtual Weather Station reading from a WMR-968
ORB Media Server
RSync Server to backup my laptop and desktop systems
TribalWeb Server
Tivo Desktop Server
Mozy Backup Client
pyTivo of course!
I use this as the central storage for all video and music. I also backup important data from my desktop and laptop via Rsync daily on a bi-weekly rotating schedule. All important data is backed up again to Mozy nightly.
(If anyone is interested in Mozy, please consider using me as a referral, PM me).
I use orb to watch and listen while on the go. I also have a Sling Box hooked up to my down-stairs S2 box.
Even with all this running all the time, I get 2x+ transcode speeds...
Here is a pic of the box:
Here is my drive config:
You can see the weather station here:
