My sister gave me a tivo she no longer uses. I am using pytivo on a lifetime series 2 box.

can i use the her non subscribed box with pytivo to watch some movies on my PC? or is a tivo subscription needed to see the tivo with pytvo?

pyTivo requires HMO. HMO only is enabled for Tivo Plus service subscription level.

If the Tivo that your sister gave you isn't one of the Pioneer or Toshiba models with lifetime Tivo Basic service, then it is effectively a brick and cannot be used at all without a subscription.
