My guess is that TiVo Desktop has a special, non-SHxxxxx ID generator that TiVo understands as a custom group without ever previously seeing the "seriesID". It is not using existing seriesIDs-- I transfered some UK episodes of EastEnders (from my auto-transfer "EastEnders" folder) and they appeared in their own Now Playing folder. Unlike when I used pyTiVo and the proper US seriesID to transfer more episodes. Those appeared in with my US copies of the program.

Other people at tivocommunity.com have suggested you had to have the new 9.3 software update to have auto-transfers (and folders) work, but I checked and I still have 9.1a on my DT box.

Yeah I agree with your assessment. But the non-SHXXXX can only be created through a more detailed process(at least from what I understand right now). Meaning you can't just start using custom IDs without first going through the initial process of auto-transfering one show. Then I think you might be able to use the generated custom ID for future pyTivo transfers.

I wonder if the communication with the TiVo home-base is what creates the new seriesID? Like Desktop tells the mothership, Elleni has a new "show" called "EastEnders" with ID DT123456. Then when my TiVo calls home it finds out about a new show with ID DT123456 (via a temporary guide) and new transfers get grouped.

(feel free to ignore my ramblings-- I know next to nothing about programming, but am full of ideas!)

No what you are saying is very possible. In fact we know that Desktop sends the new Custom ID to the "mothership" with a description of what the ID is. What occurs next we are not completely sure of, but it appears that the "mothership" "Instant Messages" the TiVo the new Custom ID.

Which is weird. Why add that overhead into the system? Why not have a TiVo OS update that will take whatever Desktop says directly? Other than the mothership learning more about the stuff we are transferring, what use is all that chatter?

I wonder, if I use an existing seriesID for a, say, CBS show, will the CBS second-by-second TiVo use report include my watching of that transfered show? And to extend that idea to these new "custom" transfers... If I have a transfer folder whose name matches a current broadcast TV show, will TiVo eventually start making the connection for the Networks about what I am watching via "illegal" time-shifting and (potential) ad-avoidance?

There goes my paranoid side! Twisted Evil
